Indian Army Conducts Large-Scale Trials of Next-Generation Defence Technologies

The Indian Army has launched extensive trials for next-generation defence technologies at several key locations throughout the country, including the Pokhran Field Firing Ranges, Babina, and Joshimath. Specialized air defence testing is also scheduled to take place in Agra and Gopalpur. These Capacity Development Demonstrations commenced earlier this month, designed to simulate operational conditions and include electronic warfare environments. This rigorous approach aims to thoroughly evaluate advanced military systems critical to national security.

On May 27, 2025, the Chief of the Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, visited the Babina Field Firing Ranges to oversee the evaluations. During his visit, he assessed the performance of various systems in development and engaged with developers and stakeholders involved in the demonstrations.

These field trials are a crucial component of the Indian Army’s vision for a “Decade of Transformation,” aimed at speeding up the integration of indigenous technologies into active military operations. The ongoing evaluations are part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, showcasing India’s growing defence manufacturing capabilities and its emphasis on self-reliance.

Among the pivotal systems under examination are unmanned aerial systems (UAS), UAV-launched precision-guided munitions (ULPGM), runway-independent remotely piloted aerial systems (RPAS), loitering munitions, and specialized vertical launch drones. Additionally, the trials include advances in counter-drone technologies, such as integrated drone detection and interdiction systems (IDDIS), alongside precision multi-munition delivery platforms.

Furthermore, next-generation Very Short Range Air Defence Systems (VSHORADS), lightweight low-level radars, and sophisticated electronic warfare platforms are undergoing extensive assessments for battlefield integration. These technologies are being tested in dynamic and realistic environments to ensure they align with the evolving operational requirements of the Indian Army.

A diverse array of domestic defence industry partners is participating in these trials, reflecting the growing collaboration between the Indian Army and both the private and public sectors within the country. This joint effort not only bolsters the Army’s operational readiness but also supports India’s long-term objectives of achieving technological superiority and strategic autonomy.

The Indian Army’s commitment to adopting and deploying indigenous, future-ready capabilities is prominently evident in the scale of these demonstrations.
