Indian Army Emerges As Winner Of Khelo India Winter Games

The Indian Army emerged as the overall winner of the fourth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games, held in Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir in two legs. Throughout the competition, the Indian Army got a total of 21 medals, including 10 gold, five silver and six bronze medals, as per Olympics.com.

At the second place is Karnataka, who secured 11 medals, out of which nine were gold and two were silver. The third-placed contingent is that of Maharashtra, who won 22 medals, out of which seven are gold, eight are silver and seven are bronze medals.

Around 800 athletes and officials from 20 states and Union Territories participated in the events, including snowboarding, alpine skiing, nordic skiing and snow mountaineering. All three previous editions, in 2020, 2021 and 2023, were hosted and won by Jammu and Kashmir. The Union Territory of Ladakh made its debut as a host this year.

In the Ladakh leg of the competition, two sports – ice hockey and speed skating – were held at the NDS Sports Stadium, Gupuks Pond and Ladakh Scout Regimental Centre (LSRC) rink.

Mascot: Sheen-e She

The mascot for the KIWG 2024 is the majestic snow leopard, named ‘Sheen-e She’ or ‘Shan’ in the Ladakh region. Native to the high-altitude areas of J&K and Ladakh, the snow leopard symbolizes the spirit of the Games and brings attention to the conservation of this endangered species.

Khelo India Games

Khelo India Youth Games, are the annual national level multidisciplinary grassroot games in India held in January or February for two categories, namely under-17 years school students and under-21 college students. On 31 January 2018, PM Narendra Modi, inaugurated Khelo India School Games at the opening ceremony based on Guru–shishya tradition held at Indira Gandhi Arena from the 2019 events, Khelo India School Games were renamed to Khelo India Youth Games after Indian Olympic Association came on board earlier in September 2018.
