The Indian Army has initiated a significant operation named ‘Operation SHIVA 2025’ to ensure the smooth and secure conduct of the annual Amarnath Yatra, a pilgrimage that attracts thousands of devotees to the sacred site in Jammu and Kashmir. This operation is being carried out in close coordination with the Civil Administration and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), emphasizing the Army’s dedication to safeguarding pilgrims as they navigate challenging terrains.
Operation SHIVA 2025 is designed to establish a comprehensive security framework that incorporates dynamic counter-terrorism strategies, proactive military deployment, and the protection of critical corridors. These security measures have become increasingly vital due to heightened threats from Pakistan-backed terrorist groups, particularly following the recent Operation Sindoor. The protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) initiated this year are anticipated to serve as enduring security guidelines for future Yatra events.
In preparation for the pilgrimage, over 8,500 troops have been deployed along both the Northern and Southern Yatra routes. Their efforts are supported by an array of operational and technological assets, including more than 50 Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) and electronic warfare systems that will neutralize potential drone threats. Continuous surveillance using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and real-time monitoring of the Holy Cave and its surrounding paths are also part of the security strategy.
Additionally, the Army has prioritized infrastructure improvements and disaster preparedness. Engineer task forces have been mobilized for various construction activities, including track widening and bridge building, alongside establishing emergency response mechanisms. The medical support network includes over 150 doctors and medical staff, two Advanced Dressing Stations, nine Medical Aid Posts, a 100-bed hospital, and 26 oxygen booths, all equipped with 200,000 liters of oxygen for emergency situations.
To further enhance communication during the Yatra, Signal Companies have been established to ensure uninterrupted connectivity. Engineering Maintenance (EME) detachments are on hand for technical maintenance, while Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads and Quick Reaction Teams are ready to address security threats swiftly. The Army has also assembled emergency rations capable of supporting 25,000 people, along with tent cities, water stations, bulldozers, and excavators for rapid deployment in response to any crisis. Indian Army helicopters are positioned on standby for immediate evacuation and emergency responses.
For continuous situational awareness, convoy movements from Jammu to the Holy Cave are being tracked in real time using high-resolution PTZ cameras and drone feeds. This live monitoring system enhances the capacity for quick threat identification and rapid force deployment, ensuring seamless coordination among all involved security and support agencies.
Operation SHIVA 2025 stands as a testament to the Indian Army’s proactive and technology-driven approach to internal security and disaster management. The aims of this operation are clear: to provide a safe, seamless, and spiritually enriching experience for all devotees participating in the Amarnath Yatra.
