In a notable demonstration of its commitment to border defense, the Indian Army’s operational preparedness has come under scrutiny during a comprehensive review led by Lieutenant General Manoj Kumar Katiyar, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Command. This assessment focused on the Pine Division and the Charging Ram Division, crucial components of the Kharga Corps, amid ongoing tensions along the western border with Pakistan.
Lt Gen Katiyar, who took charge of the Western Command in July 2023, commended the divisions for their exemplary readiness and combat efficiency. The Western Command is pivotal for safeguarding India’s western border, with the Kharga Corps, also known as II Corps, being a key operational element. Headquartered in Ambala, this Corps boasts a storied combat legacy, particularly its significant contributions during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, where it was instrumental in the capture of strategic locations in what is now Bangladesh.
The review involved thorough field inspections, engagement with frontline troops, and evaluations of training programs, equipment functionality, and tactical advancements. The Pine Division and the Charging Ram Division, formally recognized as the 22 Infantry Division based in Meerut, are dedicated to defending India’s western frontiers. These divisions are consistently adapting to the demands of contemporary warfare, incorporating new technologies, and participating in regular joint exercises as part of the Army’s modernization efforts.
This assessment takes place against a backdrop of escalating regional security complexities. India’s strategic landscape is increasingly challenged on both western and eastern fronts. A recent report from the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) suggested that China might be attempting to stretch India’s military resources by exerting pressure on both borders simultaneously. Therefore, the readiness initiatives of the Western Command align with a broader national strategy aimed at bolstering military deterrence and solidifying India’s role in the Indo-Pacific region.
Lt Gen Katiyar’s background in operational command, including his previous role as the Director General of Military Operations and command of troops in sensitive high-altitude areas like Siachen and along the Line of Control (LoC) and Line of Actual Control (LAC), adds to his capability in this strategic role. His tenure has emphasized the transformation of forces, modernization through technology, and enhanced operational flexibility.
