Director General Paramesh Sivamani of the Indian Coast Guard has been honored with the prestigious Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 2025, recognizing his exemplary service of an exceptional order. This notable accolade, which honors all ranks of the Armed Forces for outstanding peacetime contributions, was highlighted during the Republic Day honours and formally presented at the Defence Investiture Ceremony earlier this year.
Assuming the role of the 26th Director General of the Indian Coast Guard in October 2024, DG Sivamani brought with him over 35 years of dedicated service. Throughout his tenure, he has spearheaded numerous impactful operations and policy initiatives that have significantly bolstered coastal security, enhanced international maritime cooperation, and reinforced the humanitarian principles at the heart of the Coast Guard’s mission.
Under his leadership, notable achievements have included the successful seizure of narcotics and smuggled gold valued in crores, extensive rescue efforts during cyclones, and robust anti-poaching initiatives in India’s exclusive economic zone. His strategic vision has also facilitated strengthened joint exercises with foreign coast guards, thereby enhancing India’s maritime diplomacy and interoperability with crucial regional partners.
Before his current appointment, DG Sivamani held several important positions including Commander of Coast Guard Region (East and West) and Coast Guard Commander (Eastern Seaboard), roles in which he oversaw operations in some of the country’s most sensitive maritime areas. His operational foresight and coordination have been pivotal during disaster relief efforts and in enforcing maritime law, especially during natural disasters and in mitigating maritime violations.
In addition to the AVSM, DG Sivamani’s illustrious service record includes the President Tatrakshak Medal awarded in 2019, the Tatrakshak Medal in 2014, and various commendations from both the Director General of the Coast Guard and the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (East).
The awarding of the AVSM places him among a distinguished group of 57 senior officers recognized this year across the Indian Armed Forces for their outstanding contributions. DG Sivamani’s ongoing efforts continue to shape the operational readiness and strategic posture of the Indian Coast Guard, vital for safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests.
