In a significant development for India’s maritime capabilities, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi announced that the Indian Navy is projected to receive its first batch of four Rafale fighter jets by 2029. This revelation came during the recent Navy Day press conference, where the Admiral also provided insights into ongoing naval projects, particularly Project 75 India. This initiative, focused on the acquisition of six advanced submarines, is reportedly nearing completion, with a formal contract likely to be established shortly.

Admiral Tripathi further elaborated on the operational achievements of the Navy, particularly during Operation Sindoor. This operation showcased the Indian Navy’s ability to project power, as the aggressive deployment of its carrier battle group effectively compelled the Pakistan Navy to remain confined to its ports and the Makran coast. This incident highlighted India’s maritime deterrence capabilities in the region.

Since last Navy Day, the Indian Navy has recorded over 11,000 ship days and approximately 50,000 flying hours, demonstrating its sustained operational readiness. One major focus has been anti-piracy operations, with a naval ship consistently deployed in the Gulf of Aden since 2008. To date, the Navy has successfully escorted over 3,700 merchant vessels, with 138 ships involved in these operations. In recent months, the heightened regional threats, particularly from non-state actors like the Houthis, have prompted the Navy to step up its vigilance. Notably, since November 23, 62 pirates have been apprehended amid these rising threats.

Expanding its role beyond traditional defense, Admiral Tripathi highlighted the Navy’s crucial contributions to national security through anti-narcotic operations. The Navy, in coordination with other agencies, has seized contraband valued at ₹43,300 crore over the past year, underscoring its multifaceted operational role in safeguarding the nation.

The anticipated acquisition of Rafale jets, coupled with the advanced submarines and ongoing counter-threat operations, underscores the Indian Navy’s unwavering commitment to bolstering maritime security. These developments are expected to enhance the Navy’s deterrence capabilities and assert its presence in strategically vital regions.
