The Indian Navy is set to strengthen its capabilities with the formal commissioning of Ikshak, the third vessel of the Survey Vessel (Large) [SVL] class. This significant event will take place at Naval Base, Kochi, under the auspices of Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, the Chief of the Naval Staff, on November 6, 2025.
Ikshak, built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd. in Kolkata, stands as a testament to India’s advancing self-reliance in shipbuilding. Notably, over 80% of the vessel’s components are of indigenous origin, reflecting the success of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and highlighting fruitful collaborations between GRSE and Indian Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
The vessel’s name, ‘Ikshak,’ translates to ‘Guide’ in Sanskrit, which perfectly encapsulates its mission in the maritime landscape. Designed for extensive coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys, Ikshak will gather essential data related to ports, harbours, and navigational channels, ultimately supporting safe navigation and enhancing maritime security.
Ikshak is equipped with state-of-the-art hydrographic and oceanographic technologies. Key features include a high-resolution multi-beam echo sounder, an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), and four Survey Motor Boats (SMBs). The vessel also boasts a helicopter deck, significantly increasing its operational flexibility and capacity to conduct multi-domain missions.
The commissioning of Ikshak marks a pivotal advancement in the Indian Navy’s strategy to bolster its survey and charting framework. As a symbol of indigenous technological prowess and maritime stewardship, the ship is poised to play a vital role in safeguarding India’s maritime boundaries and ensuring navigational safety in its regional waters.
With the arrival of Ikshak, the Indian Navy is poised to continue redefining its standards in hydrographic excellence, further emphasizing the nation’s commitment to technological innovation and maritime self-reliance. This initiative not only enhances the Navy’s operational capabilities but also reinforces India’s strategic interests in its maritime domain.
