India’s Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), a sophisticated piece of military technology developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with Kalyani Strategic Systems, has been officially inducted into the Armenian Ground Forces. This noteworthy event signifies the inaugural overseas deployment of the 155mm/52-calibre artillery system, following a significant procurement deal in August 2023, wherein Armenia ordered six units.
The official induction ceremony showcased the ATAGS, heralding not just a milestone for the Armenian military but also underscoring India’s expanding role in the global defense supply chain. The deal, valued at approximately $155 million, highlights the strengthening defense cooperation between Armenia and India. Armenia has previously engaged in defense acquisitions from India, including the Swathi Weapon Locating Radars and the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket systems, signaling a strategic partnership in military capabilities.
The ATAGS boasts cutting-edge features such as an AI-enabled fire control system, extended operational range, and rapid mobility, positioning it as a formidable alternative to older artillery systems. Its precision, quick deployment capabilities, and low maintenance requirements have garnered attention on the international stage within artillery circles.
This development adds to the success of Kalyani Strategic Systems, which has amassed over $600 million in international defense orders by 2024. The ATAGS program is a centerpiece of India’s “Make in India” initiative, aiming to lessen reliance on foreign weaponry while propelling indigenous defense manufacturing to the forefront.
