Indian Navy Inducts ‘Mahe’ – First Indigenous Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft Built by CSL

In a landmark development for India’s maritime defense, the Indian Navy has received the ‘Mahe’, the first of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWC) constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in Kochi. This significant milestone was celebrated on October 23, 2025, marking a pivotal step in the nation’s endeavor to bolster its naval capabilities.

The vessel is named after the historic coastal town of Mahe in the Union Territory of Puducherry, a local nod that reflects India’s rich maritime heritage and its commitment to enhancing indigenous shipbuilding proficiencies.

Designed and built entirely within India, ‘Mahe’ symbolizes the principles of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, with more than 80% of its components sourced domestically. This craft is engineered for a variety of operations including underwater surveillance and low-intensity maritime operations, focusing on anti-submarine warfare in coastal waters.

Measuring approximately 78 meters in length and displacing around 1,100 tons, ‘Mahe’ is characterized by its compact design coupled with advanced capabilities. The vessel houses state-of-the-art radar, sonar, and electronic warfare systems, reinforcing its role as a sophisticated asset in coastal defense efforts. Additionally, it is equipped with lightweight torpedoes, multi-functional anti-submarine rockets, and the capability for mine-laying operations, making it a formidable addition to India’s strategic maritime forces.

The induction of the ASW SWC class is expected to significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s littoral surveillance and anti-submarine operations, ensuring improved maritime security and readiness in nearby waters.

The successful delivery of ‘Mahe’ stands as a testament to the Government of India’s pledge towards naval self-reliance and highlights the growing stature of CSL as a key shipbuilder adept at fulfilling the intricate operational needs of the Navy.

As the first of its kind in India, INS Mahe represents a blend of technological innovation, indigenous design prowess, and maritime independence, paving the way for a new era of shallow-water anti-submarine vessels in the nation’s naval fleet.
