India’s state-owned aeronautics firm, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), has announced a significant agreement with the US aerospace company General Electric (GE) to procure more than 100 engines for the Tejas fighter jet program. This deal includes a supply of 113 F404-GE-IN20 engines specifically for the advanced Mk1A version of the aircraft.

The announcement comes amid tensions in US-India relations, exacerbated by tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on India due to its continued oil purchases from Russia. Although a comprehensive trade deal remains elusive, leaders from both countries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump, have recently adopted a more positive tone towards strengthening bilateral ties.

According to HAL, the engine deliveries are scheduled to occur between 2027 and 2032. The firm did not disclose the financial details surrounding the agreement, but it marks a pivotal step in India’s efforts to enhance its domestic defense capabilities. The deal arrives just weeks after India placed a $7 billion order to HAL for 97 light combat aircraft Mk1A, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to modernizing its military forces.

As one of the largest arms importers globally, India is focused on advancing its military technology and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers. The demand for upgraded defense equipment is fueled by regional security concerns, particularly from neighboring Pakistan. The two nations experienced heightened tensions recently, resulting in their most severe military clash since 1999, with both sides claiming victories in aerial engagements.

As India continues to push for self-reliance in defense production, the collaboration with US aerospace giant GE highlights a strategic partnership that could potentially reshape the dynamics of the regional military landscape. The Tejas fighter jet, developed in India, represents a significant leap for the country’s indigenous defense production capabilities, and the acquisition of advanced engines is critical to its operational success.
