The Israel Navy has achieved a notable milestone with the successful operational test launch of its Gabriel 5 sea-to-sea missile, which Israeli officials have hailed as the “world’s most advanced” naval strike system. This significant event occurred as part of a collaboration between the navy’s Missile Ship Flotilla and the Directorate of Defense Research and Development.

During the test, the missile demonstrated its ability to skillfully detect and accurately target a simulated enemy ship. According to a statement from the Israeli defense ministry, the missile executed its launch as planned, followed its projected trajectory, and successfully struck the intended target with precision. The event, described as a simulation of real-world scenarios, aimed to further enhance the missile’s firing capabilities and overall effectiveness.

“This capability is a significant component of the Israeli Navy’s offensive array, ensuring Israel’s maritime superiority,” the ministry’s statement emphasized. The Gabriel 5 missile, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries, possesses an impressive range of over 200 kilometers (124 miles) and can operate effectively regardless of adverse sea or air conditions. Its design includes a powerful penetrating warhead that is capable of neutralizing various maritime threats, particularly enemy warships.

Moreover, the missile is outfitted with an advanced active radar seeker that includes anti-jamming features, offering a wide search range and enhanced discrimination resolution. The Gabriel 5 also flies at subsonic speeds, not only increasing its accuracy but also minimizing its thermal signature, which in turn lowers the chances of detection by adversaries.

An Israeli Navy official highlighted that the success of this test represents a critical advancement in the country’s offensive capabilities, equipping the navy to respond more effectively to emerging threats. “The Israeli Navy will continue to develop and enhance its offensive and defensive capabilities to maintain maritime superiority and ensure the security of Israel’s citizens,” the official stated.

This successful operational test follows an earlier assessment of the Gabriel 5 missile, which was first tested in September 2022 aboard a Sa’ar 6 corvette, showcasing Israel’s commitment to advancing its military technology and maintaining a strong maritime presence in the region.
