Italy Receives First Rheinmetall Skynex Air Defense System

The Italian Army has officially received its first Rheinmetall Skynex air defense system, marking a significant advancement in its military capabilities. The handover took place at the Air Defence Artillery Command located in Sabaudia, Lazio. This new system is set to enhance Italy’s close- and very-close-range air defense capabilities, allowing for improved protection against low-altitude threats, most notably unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Under a substantial contract signed in January worth 73 million euros (approximately $86 million), Rheinmetall has initiated the delivery of this cutting-edge technology. The agreement also includes an option for Italy to acquire up to three additional Skynex systems, signaling the country’s commitment to fortifying its defense framework.

Italy has the distinction of being the first NATO member to implement Rheinmetall’s Skynex technology, which prominently features the 35mm Revolver Gun Mk3. Furthermore, Romania, another NATO ally, has shown a keen interest in the Skynex system, opting to integrate it with their existing GDF-009 twin gun systems.

The Skynex systems are already operational within the Ukrainian Armed Forces, where they have effectively countered various airborne threats amidst ongoing combat scenarios. This real-world usage underscores the system’s reliability and effectiveness in challenging conditions.

Designed as a cannon-based system, the Skynex provides an efficient close-range air defense solution, particularly in circumstances where guided missiles may not be the best option. Its impressive maximum firing rate of 1,000 rounds per minute allows it to engage targets with rapid precision, extending its effective range up to 4 kilometers (about 2.5 miles).

What sets Skynex apart is its use of programmable airburst ammunition, which is designed to withstand electronic countermeasures, thus ensuring accurate target engagement. The system offers significant cost advantages when compared to conventional missile systems, making it an attractive choice for military operations.

Skynex is well-equipped to combat drones, missiles, and both guided as well as unguided artillery projectiles, thereby safeguarding critical infrastructure and protecting troops in various operational theaters.

The Italian configuration of the Skynex system features a comprehensive setup, which includes the Skynex Control Node 1 for command and control, equipped with the Skymaster Battle Management System. This setup consists of four fire control units based on the 35mm Revolver Gun Mk3 and a radar surveillance module that can monitor airspace up to 50 kilometers (approximately 31 miles) away.

One of the standout features of the Skynex system is its modular design, which allows for seamless integration with a variety of sensors and effectors. Beyond its individual components, existing air defense systems—such as Rheinmetall’s Skyshield and Skyguard families—can also be incorporated into the Skynex architecture as fire units, further enhancing its operational versatility.
