Italy has officially welcomed its first UH-169D Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) from renowned aerospace manufacturer Leonardo, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s military modernization efforts. This acquisition is part of a broader contract signed in 2020, which encompasses a total of 25 aircraft along with essential support and training services for the Italian Army. The completion of this contract is anticipated by 2027.
The recent delivery follows earlier deployments of two UH-169B basic trainer variants, which have been instrumental in familiarizing aircrew with the aircraft as the military transitions to a more advanced multirole rotary-wing fleet. The newly introduced fleet is set to undertake a variety of missions, including troop transport, medical evacuation, casualty support, and additional national security operations both domestically and internationally.
In alignment with previous contracts, Leonardo had supplied 22 UH-169s in a standard multirole variant to Italy’s Guardia di Finanza, the law enforcement agency, in 2018. This continuity in procurement reflects the Italian government’s strategy to enhance its aerial capabilities across different branches of public service.
During a formal ceremony for the handover, Gian Piero Cutillo, Managing Director of Leonardo Helicopters, emphasized the importance of the LUH program. He stated that it represents the beginning of a new era in terms of capabilities, mission flexibility, and interoperability within the lightweight aircraft segment. He also highlighted the long-standing partnership between Leonardo and the Italian military, noting the commitment to maximizing the benefits derived from these new helicopters.
The UH-169D itself boasts impressive specifications. Measuring at 15 meters (49 feet) in length with a rotor diameter of 12 meters (39 feet), the helicopter is capable of accommodating up to 12 passengers or transporting critical medical supplies with a payload limit of 250 kilograms (551 pounds). In medical emergencies, the aircraft can facilitate the transport of seven specialists and two stretchers simultaneously.
Powering the UH-169D are twin Pratt & Whitney PW210A turboshaft engines, each producing approximately 1,000 horsepower. With a maximum speed of 165 knots (306 kilometers/190 miles per hour) and an operational range of 440 nautical miles (815 kilometers/506 miles), the aircraft is engineered to offer over four hours of flight endurance—key attributes that will enhance its operational versatility.
As Italy embarks on this modernization journey, the introduction of the UH-169D LUH stands as a testament to the country’s commitment to advancing its military capabilities and ensuring readiness in various mission scenarios.
