Israeli defence manufacturer Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) is preparing to deliver the first batch of 40,000 light machine guns (LMGs) to India in early 2024, highlighting a significant advancement in Indo-Israeli defence cooperation as India seeks to modernise its security forces.

IWI CEO Shuki Schwartz announced that the multi-year contract for the LMGs, signed last year, has successfully passed all tests, trials, and government approvals. With a production license now secured, the company is set to commence deliveries at the beginning of next year. The contract encompasses a five-year supply order, though Schwartz mentioned that the rate of delivery could be accelerated.

In addition to the LMG contract, IWI is on the verge of finalising a significant agreement to provide 170,000 next-generation Close Quarters Battle (CQB) carbines to India. As part of this procurement initiative, Bharat Forge is the primary bidder for 60% of the requirement, while IWI plans to deliver the remaining 40% through PLR Systems, a joint venture with the Adani Group. This contract is currently in the pre-signing phase and is anticipated to be wrapped up either by the end of this year or early 2026.

Moreover, IWI is exploring deeper technological collaborations with Indian agencies through its Arbel technology. This advanced computerised weapon enhancement system uses sophisticated algorithms to determine when a soldier is accurately on target, then enables the shot. If approved, this system is expected to be co-produced in India via PLR Systems, further enhancing domestic manufacturing in line with the Make in India initiative.

Schwartz also pointed out IWI’s long-standing partnership with India’s Ministry of Home Affairs and various security bodies. Over the years, the company has supplied a range of firearms, including pistols, rifles, and machine guns, with an annual delivery potential that could reach tens of thousands of units to adapt to evolving operational requirements.

In light of global supply-chain disruptions, Schwartz reassured that Israel has developed a resilient defence manufacturing ecosystem capable of independently supporting partner nations, even amid restrictions or export bans from some European countries.

These developments mark a significant enhancement to India’s defence capabilities and indigenisation strategy. The ongoing collaboration with IWI not only boosts local production capabilities but also introduces cutting-edge technologies to address future security challenges.
