Kathua Railway Station Renamed in Honor of Martyr Captain Sunil Kumar Choudhary

The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has taken a significant step to honor the legacy of a local hero by renaming the Kathua Railway Station to “Martyr Captain Sunil Kumar Choudhary Kathua Railway Station.” This decision underscores the regional administration’s commitment to recognizing the valor and sacrifice of military personnel, particularly Captain Choudhary, who lost his life in the line of duty. The formal renaming was enacted through Government Order No. 129-JK(GAD) on January 29, 2026, and has been met with widespread approval from community leaders and the martyr’s family.

Captain Choudhary, a decorated officer with the 7/11 Gorkha Rifles, displayed remarkable bravery during counter-insurgency operations in Tinsukia district, Assam. Born on June 22, 1980, he was commissioned into the Indian Army on December 10, 2004. His valor earned him the Sena Medal for gallantry on January 26, 2008, for his effort in neutralizing United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) commanders in Naopather village. Tragically, the following day, during an assault in Rangagarh village, he was grievously wounded but continued fighting until he ultimately succumbed to his injuries at the age of 27. He was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry honor, recognizing his indomitable courage.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for swiftly approving the renaming, highlighting it as a fulfillment of longstanding requests from the local populace. In a statement shared on social media, Singh remarked, “Kathua Railway Station renamed as ‘Martyr Captain Sunil Kumar Choudhary Kathua Railway Station’. Thanks, PM Narendra Modi, for acceding to the demand within days of my raising it on behalf of the martyr’s family and the people of Kathua.” The new name will be featured in both English and Hindi, ensuring it serves as a lasting tribute in the martyr’s home district.

The family of Captain Choudhary has welcomed this gesture, seeing it as a significant acknowledgment of his contributions. His father, Colonel (Retd.) P.L. Choudhary, praised the government’s decision, stating, “The government has issued a notification to rename the Kathua railway station after my son to honor his sacrifice. This initiative is very commendable. Renaming schools and playgrounds after them motivates children from a young age, inspiring them to serve the nation.” His parents stressed that such memorials not only ensure that his memory lives on but also cultivate national pride and encourage future generations.

This renaming aligns with the Indian government’s broader initiative to memorialize the contributions of military personnel through public dedications. Local leaders and residents of Kathua have lauded this move as a respectful recognition of the sacrifices made to safeguard the nation. As the railway station continues serving as a key transportation hub, it now stands as a poignant reminder of Captain Choudhary’s steadfast dedication to his duty and country.
