Korean Air and LIG Nex1 have announced a strategic collaboration to participate in South Korea’s Block-I electronic warfare (EW) aircraft program, a significant initiative valued at 1.78 trillion won ($1.31 billion). This program aims to create South Korea’s inaugural large-scale electronic attack platform.
The two companies are set to submit their proposal in early September for a modified mid-sized civilian aircraft. This aircraft will be engineered to detect and analyze enemy signals effectively, while also disrupting air defense and command networks during military engagements. The partnership combines Korean Air’s expertise in system integration and aircraft modification with LIG Nex1’s capabilities in developing and installing advanced electronic warfare systems.
If their proposal is accepted, Korean Air will oversee the overall system integration, modification, and production processes of the aircraft. In contrast, LIG Nex1 will take the lead in the development and deployment of the electronic warfare systems, crucial for enhancing South Korea’s defensive and offensive aerial capabilities.
This collaboration not only marks a significant step in South Korea’s military aviation sector but also highlights the growing emphasis on self-reliance in defense technology. The successful execution of the Block-I program could bolster the country’s preparedness and strategic capabilities in the face of evolving security challenges.
