Kratos Defense & Security Solutions is making significant strides in its Birmingham operations with the inauguration of a new 40,000-square-foot facility. This expansion increases the company’s total presence at its Oxmoor Valley campus to approximately 150,000 square feet, enhancing its capability to meet the growing demands of defense and national security programs across the United States.
The newly constructed building will host office spaces alongside specialized areas designed for the development and integration of electro-mechanical systems, a critical component in modern defense applications. This strategic growth aligns with Kratos’ intent to bolster its offerings in various technology domains that are increasingly essential for national security.
Based in San Diego, Kratos stated that the Birmingham site plays a pivotal role in its operations, focusing on key areas such as intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems, as well as radar and communications platforms. Additionally, the new facility will support advanced materials inspection technologies, reinforcing the company’s commitment to innovation.
Notable programs being developed at the Birmingham location include the HORUS high-altitude imaging system and the CRADLE mobile bistatic radar communications platform. The site will also contribute to UltraSpec, a cutting-edge non-destructive inspection technology tailored for advanced composite materials.
This expansion reflects broader trends within the U.S. defense industrial landscape, where firms are increasingly committing to domestic manufacturing and integration to keep pace with sustained demand for advanced military systems. Michael Johns, Senior Vice President of Kratos SRE, noted that the company has significantly ramped up its workforce in Birmingham since the acquisition of the local business, formerly known as Southern Research Engineering, in May 2022.
Since the acquisition, Kratos has made concerted efforts to consolidate and expand its operations within a 52-acre campus in Oxmoor Valley. This site not only accommodates laboratories and developmental facilities but also supports a wide array of defense-related initiatives, including missile and strategic deterrence systems and advanced satellite communications technologies. Moreover, it plays an essential role in the development of hypersonic technologies, exotic materials testing, and trusted microelectronics.
The Birmingham campus further facilitates research into anti-tamper technologies, alongside other classified and unclassified defense programs, marking a significant advancement in Kratos’ mission to enhance national security capabilities through innovative technology development.
