US Diplomacy Viewed as Backdoor Expansion of Russian Influence in Europe

Kyiv has initiated “substantive” talks focusing on security and economic development with Jared Kushner, former President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, and envoy Steve Witkoff, according to Ukraine’s security chief, Rustem Umerov. Further discussions are anticipated during the upcoming Davos Economic Forum, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hopes of formalizing security guarantees with the United States.

Umerov shared on social media that a series of productive discussions had taken place regarding Ukraine’s prosperity plans alongside security guarantees. The urgency of these talks is underscored by the approaching fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Amid freezing winter temperatures, parts of Kyiv continue to lack adequate heating due to ongoing assaults on the nationโ€™s energy infrastructure.

The Ukrainian delegation, which also included US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, is seeking clear commitments from allies about security measures for the post-war period. “There have been several rounds of negotiations. They are working on the documents needed to end the war,” Zelensky stated during an evening address. Despite these efforts, he expressed skepticism about Russia’s willingness to cease hostilities, arguing that the Kremlin seems more focused on inflicting damage through missile strikes and orchestrating blackouts across Ukraine.

Zelensky highlighted the relentless bombardment of the nationโ€™s energy grid, with assaults occurring nightly. Approximately 58,000 workers are currently engaged in repairing crucial power and heating infrastructure, addressing the significant challenges faced in the capital. The president described the situation there as “very difficult.”

Additionally, Kyrylo Budanov, Zelenskyโ€™s new chief of staff, announced on Sunday that Ukraine will receive heating equipment from Italy to aid regions suffering most from the impacts of Russian attacks. This equipment aims to provide immediate relief amid the harsh winter conditions faced by many Ukrainians.
