Latvia Signs €370 Million Deal for 42 ASCOD Infantry Fighting Vehicles

In a significant development for its military capabilities, the Latvian government has finalized a contract with GDELS-Santa Bárbara Sistemas for the acquisition of 42 ASCOD infantry fighting vehicles. This procurement, valued at 370 million euros (approximately $385 million), includes logistics support, although the delivery timeline for the vehicles has yet to be announced.

Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds expressed enthusiasm regarding this purchase, emphasizing that the integration of new and modern infantry fighting vehicles represents a pivotal advancement in the mechanization of the Latvian Army’s Land Forces. He also highlighted the positive implications of this deal for the national military industry, which is expected to play a role in the delivery of the new fighting vehicles.

The procurement journey commenced earlier in 2023, as Latvia sought to enhance its defense capabilities through the selection of various potential suppliers. The evaluation process involved functional tests in the autumn of 2023, followed by a comprehensive analysis conducted by military experts. The assessment criteria included the cost of the platforms, availability of equipment, requirements for local industry engagement, and the timelines for delivery.

Alejandro Page, Vice President of GDELS Santa Bárbara Sistemas, expressed gratitude for the selection of the ASCOD infantry fighting vehicle as the preferred choice of the Latvian National Armed Forces in an international competition. Page emphasized the company’s eagerness to collaborate with Latvia’s national defense industry to bolster the country’s military capabilities and deliver the advanced vehicles.

The ASCOD infantry fighting vehicle is designed with robust protection features, conforming to NATO STANAG 4569 level four armor standards. This level of protection effectively safeguards against kinetic and mine blast threats, including projectiles from 14.5×114 mm machine guns and 20 mm autocannon fire. Designed to operate with a crew of three, the tracked vehicle can also transport up to six soldiers fully equipped for combat.

Armed with a range of weaponry such as an auto cannon, anti-tank weapons, and machine guns, the ASCOD is equipped with cutting-edge technologies to improve the battlefield situational awareness of its operators. This acquisition marks a significant step in enhancing Latvia’s defense posture amidst evolving security dynamics in the region.
