Latvian defense startup Origin Robotics has unveiled an innovative autonomous counter-drone system known as “BLAZE.” This advanced technology leverages artificial intelligence to identify and neutralize fast-moving aerial threats, marking a significant step forward in the realm of air defense.
BLAZE offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional gun-based air defense systems and expensive missile interceptors, a crucial consideration as military budgets face increasing scrutiny. With the ongoing regional security challenges in mind, Origin Robotics intends to solidify its presence in the European and NATO defense markets. The push comes at a critical time, particularly regarding the situation in Ukraine, where Russia reportedly launches over 2,500 unmanned aerial vehicles monthly. This scale of drone warfare is transforming military tactics, highlighting an urgent demand for sophisticated and affordable air defense solutions.
The features of BLAZE are designed for efficiency and effectiveness. This man-portable system seamlessly integrates radar detection with AI-driven visual tracking to autonomously identify and lock onto its targets. Once an operator authorizes engagement, BLAZE can neutralize threats through direct impact or by detonating a high-explosive fragmentation warhead in proximity to the target. Importantly, the system allows the operator to maintain ultimate control, including the ability to issue a wave-off command to redirect the interceptor or trigger self-destruction of the system if necessary.
Designed for rapid deployment, BLAZE comes in a compact transport case that functions as both a launch platform and a charging unit. This innovative design enables setup in under 10 minutes without the need for tools, making it highly flexible for various operational scenarios.
In a broader context, recent developments reflect the commitment of the Latvian government and local defense companies to bolster military capabilities. They’ve been proactive in supplying equipment to aid Ukraine in its defense efforts. In March, contracts were awarded to several local firms, including Origin Robotics, SAF Tehnika, and Frankenburg Technologies, to develop counter-drone systems for the Latvian armed forces.
Moreover, Latvia initiated the delivery of 500 combat drones to Ukraine as part of a collaborative effort led by Latvia and the UK, involving 17 countries. This initiative aims to allocate $1.9 billion in 2024 to enhance Ukraine’s military capabilities, with Latvia contributing $21.1 million this year alone, a commitment it plans to sustain moving forward.
