In a pivotal leadership transition within the Indian Army, Lieutenant General V Sreehari has assumed the role of General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Dakshin Bharat Area, following the tenure of Lieutenant General Karanbir Singh Brar. The handover ceremony was held at the Army headquarters in Chennai, signifying an official change of command effective from August 1, 2025.
The ceremony showcased traditional military customs, including the ceremonial exchange of a baton, representing the seamless transfer of command responsibilities. The atmosphere was enhanced by the display of national and regional flags, symbolizing the rich heritage and unified spirit of the armed forces.
Lt Gen Sreehari, commissioned in 1987 into the 16 Sikh Light Infantry, later joined the prestigious Para Regiment, serving in various command and staff positions. His blend of experience in conventional infantry and special operations is expected to enrich the strategic leadership of the Dakshin Bharat Area. In this new capacity, he will be responsible for crucial logistics, administrative operations, and coordination across the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala.
The Dakshin Bharat Area stands as one of the Indian Army’s critical regional commands, historically significant for its role in national integration, with notable contributions during operations in Hyderabad in 1948. Presently, it supports essential military installations and units, ensuring operational readiness in the region.
This leadership change occurs alongside broad structural transformations in the Indian armed forces, driven by the Inter-Services Organisation (Command, Control and Discipline) Act, 2023. This legislation is designed to enhance collaboration between the Army, Navy, and Air Force through the establishment of integrated theater commands. However, defense analysts emphasize that clarity around the operational role of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) remains a focal point in these ongoing reforms.
The outgoing commander, Lt Gen Brar, received commendations for his noteworthy tenure, with particular recognition for his initiatives aimed at improving regional infrastructure and bolstering operational capabilities, celebrated during his farewell address.
In his inaugural speech, Lt Gen Sreehari expressed gratitude for his new position and reiterated his commitment to enhancing defense readiness and operational support across southern India. This leadership transition reflects the Indian Army’s ongoing dedication to maintaining a strong defense posture amidst the evolving strategic landscape.
