Leonardo and Weststar Aviation Group have reached a pivotal agreement to supply a range of helicopters for the Malaysian Armed Forces, a deal officially unveiled during an aerospace and maritime exhibit held in Langkawi. The comprehensive “sale and purchase” framework will facilitate the delivery of up to 28 rotary-wing aircraft, with a portion designated for various government agencies in Kuala Lumpur.
The helicopter package will encompass different “orders and options,” ensuring flexibility and adaptability to the needs of the operators. This arrangement also includes essential in-country support and training services tailored for the aircraft’s respective operators, enhancing operational efficiency and effectiveness.
Among the models featured in the agreement is the AW149 medium-lift multirole helicopter, specifically intended for the Royal Malaysian Air Force and the Royal Malaysian Army. This helicopter is designed for vital combat search and rescue missions, highlighting its operational versatility. Additionally, other aircraft supplied will be equipped with systems capable of performing diverse functions such as law enforcement, transportation, disaster relief, firefighting, and homeland security.
The delivery schedule for these aircraft is set to take place between 2026 and 2027. As part of the initiative to bolster the local aviation industry, Leonardo is committed to providing ongoing support through its Helicopter Training Academy in Malaysia. Future enhancements will include the integration of local full-flight simulators and interactive training setups for aircrew students, aiming to develop local expertise and skill sets in aviation.
Furthermore, Leonardo plans to extend its maintenance, repair, and overhaul operations to include electronic components, mission systems, and rotor blade maintenance. This strategic move positions Malaysia as a significant international support hub for Leonardo, amplifying the country’s role in the aerospace sector.
Gian Piero Cutillo, Managing Director of Leonardo Helicopters, emphasized the significance of this initiative, noting the company’s deep-rooted presence and investment in Malaysia over the years. He stated that the partnership not only addresses critical security and life-saving objectives but also fosters local economic growth and job creation.
Highlighting key drivers of success, Cutillo underscored the importance of proximity, innovation, and professional skills, asserting Malaysia’s status as an essential hub for Leonardo’s operations in the region. The company remains committed to working alongside Malaysian authorities to ensure that its technology and services perform optimally, reinforcing its dedication to support the nation’s defense and security needs.
