“Let’s Make UN More Effective”: French President
French President Emmanuel Macron voiced France’s support for India’s inclusion as a permanent member of the UNSC. The remarks by Macron came during his address at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Notably, India has long sought a permanent seat in the Security Council to better represent the interests of the developing world. The nation’s quest has gained momentum with support from the international community.
The five permanent members of the UNSC include China, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and the United States. The non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council are elected for 2-year terms by the UNGA.
EAM S Jaishankar, Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira, and South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, held a meeting on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the UNGA in New York. The IBSA unequivocally condemned terrorism in all its forms, advocating for a broad international counter-terrorism framework grounded in international law. This framework would support the UN’s central role in coordinating global counter-terrorism efforts.
Türkiye’s Erdoğan Skips Kashmir Issue At UNGA
For the first time in several years, Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan refrained from mentioning Kashmir during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Since 2019, Erdogan has consistently brought up the issue of Kashmir, especially following India’s decision to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and bifurcate the region into two union territories. His omission this year is a significant departure from his previous stances, where he has often advocated for resolving the Kashmir conflict through dialogue and cooperation between India and Pakistan. This development aligns with Turkiye’s broader international goals, including its aspirations to join the BRICS grouping.
Jaishankar, Iranian Counterpart Araghchi Meet
S Jaishankar and Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi met briefly on the sidelines of the UNGA. Jaishankar shared a photo of him and the Iranian foreign minister from the UNGA in New York and said both met before a meeting of the BRICS nations. The meeting comes in the backdrop of the conflicts in West Asia, where Israel is engaged in conflicts with Iran-backed Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon as well as with Yemen’s Houthis.
