LG CNS, a prominent South Korean IT company, has recently been awarded two contracts by Seoul’s Defense Information Agency aimed at modernizing the country’s military networks and digital infrastructure.
The first initiative focuses on integrating communication networks across the Korean Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This “Network Integration Project for Parallel Communications Networks” is designed to standardize network environments, significantly enhancing data flow across all military branches. Previously, each branch operated on its own independent system, which restricted fast and efficient information sharing.
To address these challenges, the project will utilize software-defined networking technologies, allowing for centralized control of routers nationwide. Enhanced security measures will be implemented, including firewalls to prevent unauthorized access and intrusion detection systems capable of identifying and neutralizing potential threats. Furthermore, the project will introduce protections against large-scale traffic floods that could impede or halt network operations. An AI-based monitoring system will be deployed to observe network activity in real-time, dramatically speeding up the analysis of threats from minutes to mere seconds. This will enable military personnel to devote more attention to advanced security tasks rather than basic monitoring.
The second project, known as the “Next-Generation Defense Facility Integrated Information System Construction Project,” will overhaul the Defense Information Agency’s current system for managing military facilities. This new integrated platform will connect 12 internal government business systems with eight external platforms, effectively combining administrative, financial, and operational data with vital geospatial information, such as topographical and land parcel maps.
This integrated approach is anticipated to empower planners and managers by providing a comprehensive view of all aspects related to defense facility operations, including planning, budgeting, and construction. Additionally, it will cover maintenance and national property management, all accessible through a unified user interface. With these initiatives, LG CNS aims to enhance efficiency and coordination within the South Korean military’s operational processes, making significant strides in modernizing the nation’s defense infrastructure.
