Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth Visits Junior Leaders Wing to Enhance Army Leadership Training

Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, AVSM, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army’s Southern Command, recently visited the Junior Leaders Wing (JLW) at the Belagavi Military Station. This visit underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to enhancing junior leadership capabilities in the context of an ever-evolving security landscape.

During his tour, Lt Gen Seth received a comprehensive briefing from the Commandant of JLW regarding the institution’s rigorous training programs. The training modules emphasize the development of combat skills, leadership qualities, and stress endurance among young officers. The Army Chief also assessed the training infrastructure, which features high-tech simulators and realistic battlefield scenarios. These resources are specifically designed to prepare officers to navigate hybrid and asymmetric threats effectively.

Commending the dedication of the instructors and staff, Lt Gen Seth highlighted the pivotal role that JLW plays in preparing soldiers for the complexities of modern warfare. He acknowledged the importance of fostering confidence and tactical proficiency within the Indian Army’s junior leadership ranks.

Founded in 1971, the Junior Leaders Wing stands out as one of India’s premier military training institutions. It provides training not only for personnel from the Indian Army but also for members of paramilitary forces, central armed police units, and even military personnel from friendly foreign nations. The JLW’s contributions to officer and commando training were recognized in 2016 when it was awarded a Unit Citation for excellence.

Lt Gen Seth, who took command of the Southern Command on July 1, 2024, following his previous leadership of the South Western Command, emphasized the significance of junior leadership in contemporary combat scenarios. His visit also serves to spotlight the historical legacy of the Southern Command, which has played a crucial role in significant military operations, including the 1961 liberation of Goa and the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

This visit aligns with broader trends in military training, as highlighted by a recent study from the Journal of Defense Studies. This research stresses the imperative for armed forces to rapidly adapt in response to emerging security threats. Lt Gen Seth’s outreach reinforces the Army’s proactive commitment to developing a forward-looking, adaptive, and combat-ready force through esteemed institutions like the Junior Leaders Wing.
