Lieutenant General Dinesh Singh Rana has been appointed the new Chief of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), a critical tri-services formation responsible for the management and operationalization of India’s nuclear arsenal and strategic missile capabilities. He will officially take command on October 1, succeeding Vice Admiral Suraj Berry, who has retired after an impressive 38-year career in service.
Lt Gen Rana has a distinguished background as an infantry officer in the Garhwal Rifles and currently serves as the Colonel of the Regiment for this esteemed unit. Before this new role, he was the Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (CINCAN), which is India’s only operational tri-services command. Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar will be stepping into the position as the new CINCAN.
The Strategic Forces Command plays a pivotal role in India’s nuclear command and control framework. Operating under the Nuclear Command Authority—chaired by the Prime Minister—the SFC is charged with the readiness, deployment, and security of the nation’s nuclear weapons and delivery systems.
Lt Gen Rana’s appointment highlights the government’s commitment to maintaining robust leadership in this vital area of the Indian defense establishment, particularly given the growing complexities and challenges in the strategic landscape. His extensive experience and track record are expected to greatly benefit the strategic direction and operational readiness of the country’s nuclear capabilities.
