In a significant event reflecting deep military tradition, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai was officially appointed as the Colonel of the Regiment for the Kumaon Regiment, Kumaon Scouts, and Naga Regiment on March 23, 2026, at the Kumaon Regimental Centre in Ranikhet. This esteemed role was previously held by Lieutenant General Ram Chander Tiwari, who concluded his tenure as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command.

The position of Colonel of the Regiment is among the most esteemed titles within the Indian Army, symbolizing not just ceremonial leadership but also a commitment to the regiment’s heritage, ethos, and welfare. The appointee is expected to nurture loyalty among personnel, provide guidance on training and operational doctrines, and preserve traditions and battle honours, ensuring they continue to resonate across generations.

Lieutenant General Ghai, who was commissioned into the Kumaon Regiment on December 16, 1989, has over 36 years of distinguished service characterized by exceptional leadership in varied operational landscapes. An alumnus of prestigious institutions, including the National Defence Academy and the Defence Services Staff College, he has successfully commanded units at different levels. His previous roles include General Officer Commanding of the XV Corps (Chinar Corps) in Srinagar and Director General of Military Operations at Army Headquarters, where he was significantly involved in strategic planning efforts, including Operation Sindoor.

His extensive experience encompasses counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir, high-altitude warfare in Siachen, and UN peacekeeping missions in Lebanon. Ghai has held vital staff positions in the Military Operations Directorate and Northern Command, earning numerous accolades for his distinguished service, including the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal.

On assuming his new role, Lieutenant General Ghai conveyed a profound sense of pride and humility in leading the esteemed regiments, which have a distinguished history marked by valour and sacrifice. He outlined key priorities for his tenure, focusing on soldier welfare, skill enhancement through modern technology like drones and AI-driven surveillance, and strengthening regimental cohesion to respond effectively to evolving security challenges, especially along the Line of Control, Line of Actual Control, and within internal security frameworks.

The Kumaon Regiment, established in 1815, is renowned for its extraordinary actions, such as the celebrated defence at Rezang La during the 1962 conflict. The Kumaon Scouts are proficient in mountain warfare, while the Naga Regiment, the youngest infantry unit of the Indian Army established in 1970, has gained recognition for its excellence in counter-insurgency operations. Collectively, these regiments have received more than 7,000 gallantry awards, including two Param Vir Chakras, illustrating their crucial role in national defence.

This leadership transition is seen as a testament to the Indian Army’s dedication to maintaining continuity while reinforcing its regimental framework. Defence analysts regard the appointment as a strategic move that enhances institutional strength and morale amid ongoing modernization initiatives under the Atmanirbhar Bharat program.

The ceremony attracted senior military officials and coincided with the release of “Valour Triumphs II: A Modern History of Kumaon and Naga Regiment,” celebrated with the same military fervour among troops stationed at various forward locations. This new appointment underscores the invaluable connection between leadership and the dedicated soldiers who embody the regiments’ motto of valour, honour, and discipline in their service to the nation.
