An alumnus of prestigious institutions, including the National Defence Academy and the Defence Services Staff College, he has successfully commanded units at different levels. His previous roles include General Officer Commanding of the XV Corps (Chinar Corps) in Srinagar and Director General of Military Operations at Army Headquarters, where he was significantly involved in strategic planning efforts, including Operation Sindoor.
His extensive experience encompasses counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir, high-altitude warfare in Siachen, and UN peacekeeping missions in Lebanon. Ghai has held vital staff positions in the Military Operations Directorate and Northern Command, earning numerous accolades for his distinguished service, including the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal.
