Lockheed Martin’s Polish subsidiary, PZL Mielec, has initiated the production of two Sikorsky S-70 Firehawk helicopters for Czechia. This advanced firefighting aircraft, an adaptation of the well-known Black Hawk, is specifically tailored for aerial firefighting and emergency responses, featuring a 1,000-gallon (3,785-liter) water tank, retractable snorkel, twin engines, and night-vision capabilities.
These helicopters will also be integrated into the RescEU pool, a cross-border resource designed to respond effectively to disasters such as wildfires, floods, and earthquakes across Europe.
The project marks a significant milestone for the Czech Republic, as it will become the first nation in Europe to possess operational Firehawk capabilities. Monika Kowalczykova, CEO of the Helicopter Alliance company Česká letecká servisní, emphasized that this initiative goes beyond mere procurement; it represents a pioneering effort within Europe.
In this collaborative effort, PZL Mielec is tasked with assembling the Black Hawk airframe, while United Rotorcraft is responsible for installing critical firefighting equipment, including the water tanks and additional search-and-rescue tools. They will also oversee crew training and long-term maintenance of the helicopters.
Lockheed Martin aims to provide Czech operators with an operational capacity similar to that enjoyed by U.S. agencies such as CAL FIRE and the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Dr. Dennis Goege, Vice President and Chief Executive for Europe at Lockheed Martin, referred to this initiative as more than just a manufacturing achievement; he noted it is a significant first step toward establishing a continent-wide aerial firefighting network.
Goege highlighted that by utilizing proven technology sourced from a European supply chain, the initiative will equip communities across Europe with vital resources to safeguard lives, properties, and natural ecosystems against disasters.
