Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, the current General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Indian Army’s Southern Command, is scheduled to take on the prestigious role of Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS) at Army Headquarters in New Delhi starting April 1, 2026. This appointment is part of a significant senior leadership reshuffle that will affect several three-star generals across major operational commands within the Indian Army.
Taking up the position of Vice Chief places Lt Gen Seth among the highest echelons of military leadership in India, second only to the Chief of the Army Staff. This critical role entails overseeing operational preparedness, spearheading modernization initiatives, and engaging in strategic planning, while also ensuring effective coordination among various Army commands and formations throughout the country.
Lt Gen Seth has been at the helm of Southern Command, based in Pune, which is one of the largest geographical commands of the Indian Army. This command plays a pivotal role in managing military operations and infrastructure across peninsular India. Under Lt Gen Seth’s leadership, Southern Command has focused on enhancing operational readiness and elevating training standards, vital for maintaining national security.
His transition to Army Headquarters is a notable milestone in his esteemed military career, bringing substantial field command expertise to the central decision-making body of the Indian Army. The Vice Chief role inherently involves significant oversight of daily Army operations, policy execution, capability advancement, and long-term planning.
In addition to administrative functions, the Vice Chief is instrumental in liaising with the Ministry of Defence and coordinating with other branches of the armed forces, as well as government agencies engaged in national security. This position demands a leader with deep operational insight and multifaceted experience in military leadership.
Lt Gen Seth assumes this critical role at a time when the Indian Army is prioritizing modernization and technological integration while ensuring high operational readiness along its active borders. Continuous security challenges linger along the western frontier with Pakistan and the northern and eastern borders with China. Given this complex landscape, strategic leadership at the highest levels becomes paramount.
His promotion is anticipated to bolster the Army’s strategic planning and operational coordination at the uppermost tiers. With extensive experience in commanding a major operational formation, Lt Gen Seth is expected to offer valuable perspectives to Army Headquarters as the institution adapts to emerging security challenges.
In tandem with Lt Gen Seth’s transition, significant changes are set to shake up the Indian Army’s command structure. The current Vice Chief, Lt Gen PP Singh, will be moving on to head the Western Command, while the Quartermaster General, Lt Gen VMB Krishnan, is set to take over as the new Eastern Commander.
This leadership reshuffle reflects the Indian Army’s enduring practice of rotating senior officers between field commands and critical staff roles at Army Headquarters. Such rotations are designed to ensure that the top leadership possesses a balanced mix of operational experience and strategic oversight.
As Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth prepares to step into the Vice Chief position, this pivotal transition within the Indian Army’s command structure aims to maintain continuity, strengthen operational readiness, and ensure effective leadership in light of increasingly dynamic regional security scenarios.
