Lt Gen Pratik Sharma Visits Siachen Glacier to Reaffirm India's Commitment and Address Environmental Concerns

Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, who took command of the Indian Army’s Northern Command on May 1, 2025, recently conducted a significant visit to the Siachen Glacier, reaffirming India’s unwavering commitment to securing its territory in this challenging environment, known as the world’s highest battlefield.

The Siachen Glacier, positioned at an altitude exceeding 6,000 meters, has been under Indian control since Operation Meghdoot in 1984. This paramount military operation succeeded in securing over 1,000 square miles of contested territory. During his visit, Lt Gen Sharma paid homage at the Siachen Memorial, honoring the sacrifices of more than 900 Indian soldiers who have lost their lives due to the extreme conditions and combat situations in this harsh climate.

In addition to paying tribute, Lt Gen Sharma conducted a thorough inspection of the operational readiness of the forces stationed at both the forward posts and the base camp. He commended the troops for their extraordinary courage, perseverance, and professionalism, and stressed the importance of maintaining high levels of preparedness in the face of ongoing challenges posed by the treacherous terrain, severe weather, and regional tensions.

The visit also brought to light the ecological implications of a sustained military presence in the region. A 2011 study by The Energy and Resources Institute indicated that the Siachen Glacier could shrink by as much as 80% by 2035, a change attributed to climate change coupled with military activities. In a proactive response, the Defence Research and Development Organisation initiated a project in 2023 aimed at developing bacteria capable of decomposing waste, which is expected to mitigate environmental damage in this fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

Lt Gen Sharma’s visit not only underscores the strategic significance of the Siachen Glacier but also reflects the Indian Army’s commitment to operational excellence alongside environmental stewardship in one of the planet’s most sensitive regions.
