Lt Gen Rajesh Pushkar, AVSM, VSM, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Kharga Corps, conducted an extensive operational review of the Ram Division and Pine Gunners on Monday. This high-level assessment highlighted the commendable performance of these units during Operation Raahat, a significant humanitarian mission in 2015 where the Indian Army evacuated over 4,640 overseas Indians and 960 foreign nationals from Yemen amid a civil conflict.

During the review, Lt Gen Pushkar commended the troops for their relentless dedication to integrating advanced technology into their operational strategies while also maintaining a high state of readiness. The focus on technological integration aligns with the Indian Army’s modern military advancements, particularly in utilizing AI-driven drones and sophisticated surveillance systems. This shift was further accentuated by the successful Kharga Shakti exercise conducted in Rajasthan in 2024, which tested the Corps’ combat readiness through live firing drills, tactical movements, and coordinated air support missions. This exercise validated the effectiveness of combined arms operations in simulated battlefield conditions.

Established on October 7, 1971, the Kharga Corps is a critical element of India’s defense strategy. Originally set up in Krishna Nagar, West Bengal, it was positioned in the Eastern Theatre but relocated to the Western Theatre post-war. The Corps’ base moved first to Chandimandir Cantonment, and finally to Ambala in January 1985. Known for its strong offensive capabilities, the Kharga Corps comprises key units including the 1 Armoured Division, 14 Infantry Division (RAPID), 22 Infantry Division, 40 Artillery Division, and various independent brigades. Under Lt Gen Pushkar’s leadership, the Corps maintains its reputation as a formidable force on the Western Front, reflecting the Indian Army’s commitment to modern warfare techniques and national defense.

Lt Gen Pushkar boasts a distinguished career, having served as the Director General of the Territorial Army and studied at the National Defence College. His unique blend of strategic and administrative expertise stands in contrast to traditional military career paths, which often prioritize field command. This approach emphasizes a comprehensive perspective on military readiness and the incorporation of technological advancements.

The GOC’s endorsement of the troops further solidifies the Kharga Corps’ status as a cornerstone of India’s military strength, positioning it to effectively tackle future challenges with unmatched preparedness.
