Cowardly terrorists abduct and martyr a young Army Officer on leave in his hometown in J&K. Lt Ummer Fayaz of 2 RAJRIF who was posted in Akhnoor, he was just commissioned in Dec 2016 from IMA. He was on leave to attend a pre-marriage ceremony at his uncle’s place at night from where he was abducted by terrorists and his bullet-riddled body was found at Harmen (West of Behibagh).

His records at the academy were also good,” an NDA official said. Lt Gen Abhay Krishna, the Colonel of Rajputana Rifles, grew emotional while paying tribute to the lieutenant. “We have lost a very good officer. Lt Fayaz was extraordinarily tough and highly motivated. He was always ready to take on challenges and believed in leading from the front.

Expressing horror, Lt Gen Krishna said, “They killed a young and promising boy who was on leave to attend the wedding of his cousin and was unarmed. How does killing a young local boy square with the alleged freedom struggle they claim to be waging? This only proves once again that they are just a bunch of criminals.” The killing, he said, must serve as a wake-up call.

The commander told the bereaved family that Fayaz was a martyr and that person, even though silent, were with them.

During 2017, Lt Ummer’s unit was operating in the Akhnoor sector of J & K. By May 2017, Lt Ummer had completed nearly four months in the unit and had honed his field craft skills. As a young energetic officer of the unit, Lt Ummer had endeared himself to his seniors and juniors as well with his soldierly skills and affable nature. In early May 2017, Lt Ummer went to his home town on leave to attend one of the family members’ wedding. The wedding of his uncle’s daughter happened to be at Batapura near Behibag in Shopian district of J & K. In an unfortunate and dastardly act, the terrorists kidnapped Lt Ummer from there and later brutally killed him. His bullet-ridden body was later recovered from Harmain village in Shopian district of J & K. Lt Ummer as an Army officer was the pride of the family and was the source of inspiration for many young people of his village. He was serving as a role model for many youngsters and was responsible for many youths from nearby villages joining the army. This probably had irked the terrorists and was the reason for his kidnapping and subsequent killing. The precious life of a dedicated and committed soldier was lost in this reprehensible and dastardly action by terrorists.
