Major General Harinder Singh Mavi has officially taken command as Inspector General of Assam Rifles (North) in a ceremony held in Kohima, Nagaland. The event, which took place on January 19, 2026, marked the transition of leadership from Major General Manish Kumar, who holds the Sena Medal (Bar).
The handover ceremony adhered to traditional military customs, reflecting the dignity associated with such a significant transfer of command. This seamless transition is especially important given the operational challenges faced by the Assam Rifles in one of the country’s most sensitive areas.
Upon assuming his new role, Major General Mavi paid homage to the storied legacy of the Assam Rifles and recognized the important contributions of his predecessor in achieving operational effectiveness while maintaining stability in the region. His remarks emphasized his confidence in the professionalism and dedication of the personnel under his command. He further underscored the need for a continued focus on operational readiness, community engagement, and excellence in mission execution.
This leadership change highlights the crucial role that the Assam Rifles play in the Northeast region, particularly in strengthening border management and supporting peace and development initiatives. Major General Mavi’s appointment is seen as a vital enhancement to the efforts aimed at maintaining security and fostering cooperation within this strategically important part of the country.
