Major Malla Rama Gopal Naidu Awarded Kirti Chakra for Gallantry in Jammu and Kashmir Operation

In a significant ceremony held on May 22, 2025, President Droupadi Murmu awarded Major Malla Rama Gopal Naidu of the Maratha Light Infantry, 56 Rashtriya Rifles, with the Kirti Chakra. This prestigious accolade, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry honor, was presented in recognition of Major Naidu’s remarkable valor and leadership during a critical counter-infiltration operation in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, which took place on October 26, 2023.

The operation was initiated following specific intelligence inputs that indicated a group of five terrorists attempting to cross the Line of Control. At around 10:10 AM, Major Naidu and his team launched a strategic intercept against the infiltrators. Despite being met with a barrage of gunfire and grenade attacks, Major Naidu displayed extraordinary courage, guiding his troops with determination. In an act of heroism, he eliminated one of the terrorists at close range, sustaining injuries during the encounter. His decisive actions were pivotal in ensuring the mission’s success while also safeguarding the lives of his fellow soldiers.

Originating from Nagiripenta village in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district, Major Naidu comes from humble beginnings, being born to a farmer’s family. His aspiration to serve the nation was nurtured from an early age. He received his education at Sainik School and subsequently trained at the National Defence Academy from 2012 to 2015, followed by the Indian Military Academy from 2015 to 2016. Commissioned into the Indian Army in 2016, he has consistently exhibited commitment and dedication throughout his military career.

The Kupwara operation underscores the ongoing security challenges faced along the Line of Control, where infiltration attempts remain a pressing concern. Reports indicate that between 2019 and 2023, over 1,100 attempts occurred, highlighting the critical need for vigilant border security. The bravery and skill exhibited by Major Naidu and his unit are essential in countering cross-border terrorism and maintaining India’s border integrity.

Among the six awardees at this year’s Gallantry Awards, Major Naidu was the sole living recipient of the Kirti Chakra, while the others received their honors posthumously, representing personnel from both the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police. His nomination was publicly acknowledged on Independence Day 2024, a moment of immense pride for his family and local community. His father, Malla Appalanaidu, expressed his pride in his son’s achievements, reminiscing about Major Naidu’s childhood aspiration to join the armed forces.

The Maratha Light Infantry, one of the Indian Army’s oldest and most decorated regiments, boasts a rich history that dates back to 1768. With a record of 56 battle honors, the regiment continues to be a key component of India’s military capabilities. Major Naidu’s exemplary actions contribute to this storied legacy, embodying the spirit of bravery and sacrifice inherent in those who serve to protect the nation.

As India honors its heroes during the Gallantry Awards 2025, Major Naidu’s extraordinary acts of valor resonate as an inspiring testament to duty, honor, and service to the country.
