Captain Shiva Chauhan of the Corps of Engineers is the first female Army officer to be sent to a frontline post in Siachen Glacier. After completing his training, the officer was sent to Siachen, to the Kumar post, which is located at an altitude of about 15,600 feet. The training included activities such as simulated avalanche and crevasse rescue, as well as ice wall climbing, endurance workouts, and survival drills.
Bengal Sapper Officer Capt. Shiva Chouhan is a Rajasthan native. Chouhan’s mother, a housewife, took care of her academics when her father passed away when she was 11 years old. She attended school in Udaipur and received her civil engineering degree from NJR Institute of Technology in Udaipur.
After enduring gruelling training at the highest battleground in the world, Siachen, Captain Shiva Chauhan of the Fire and Fury Sappers became the first woman officer to be operationally deployed in Kumar Post. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Captain Chauhan for her accomplishment.
Capt. Chouhan successfully led the Sura Soi Cycling Expedition from Siachen War Memorial to Kargil War Memorial in July 2022, covering a distance of 508 kilometres. The expedition was held in honour of Kargil Vijay Diwas.
She then accepted the responsibility of commanding the Sura Soi Engineer Regiment’s soldiers at Siachen, and as a result of her success, she was chosen to attend the Siachen Battle School for training.
At the Siachen Battle School, Captain Shiva Chouhan and other personnel underwent tough training that included endurance exercises, ice wall climbing, avalanche and crevasse rescue exercises, and survival drills.
After a difficult hike, she was officially welcomed into the Siachen Glacier on January 2 of this year.
The Sappers squad, directed by Capt. Chouhan, will be stationed at the position for three months, performing a variety of combat engineering duties.
