The Ministry of Defence has finalized a substantial contract worth ₹2,095.70 crore with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the acquisition of INVAR anti-tank guided missiles, marking a significant advancement in the Indian Army’s armoured warfare capabilities.

This procurement will provide the Army’s T-90 main battle tanks with enhanced precision strike capabilities, thereby increasing their lethality during mechanised operations. The agreement falls under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category, reinforcing the government’s commitment to fostering self-reliance and bolstering indigenous defence manufacturing initiatives.

The INVAR missile system, produced at BDL’s domestic facilities, incorporates all critical components—including guidance and propulsion systems—sourced from within India. This laser-guided anti-tank missile is designed to engage both stationary and moving armoured targets effectively. Its unique capability to be fired directly from the T-90’s gun barrel ensures a rapid response, bolstering accuracy in high-intensity combat scenarios.

Specifically engineered to counter modern armoured platforms that utilize explosive reactive armour, the INVAR system significantly enhances tactical superiority and increases the survivability of tank crews. According to the Ministry of Defence, this acquisition is a crucial step in augmenting the Indian Army’s readiness in theatres where armoured manoeuvre warfare plays a vital role.

Bharat Dynamics Limited, a long-standing supplier of guided weapon systems to the armed forces, aims to fortify its position within India’s missile development ecosystem through this contract. This deal aligns with the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which seeks to reduce dependence on imports and enhance indigenous research, development, and production in the defence sector.

The contract contributes to ongoing modernization efforts initiated by the Ministry of Defence aimed at upgrading India’s missile capabilities, armoured units, and overall combat readiness.
