In a significant move to bolster India’s maritime security, the Ministry of Defence has finalized a contract worth Rs 2,312 crore with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the acquisition of eight Dornier 228 aircraft, along with associated Operational Role Equipment for the Indian Coast Guard. This agreement falls under the Buy (Indian) category, emphasizing the governmentโ€™s commitment to indigenous manufacturing in the defense sector.

The contract was officially signed in New Delhi on February 12, 2026, with Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh present at the event. The Dornier 228 aircraft will be manufactured at HALโ€™s Transport Aircraft Division located in Kanpur, a decision that reinforces the nation’s capacity for self-reliance in defense aviation.

The addition of these aircraft is expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard in areas such as maritime surveillance, search and rescue missions, pollution monitoring, and coastal security operations. The Dornier 228 is recognized for its versatility, reliability, and suitability for extended operations across the expansive maritime zones of India.

Furthermore, this procurement initiative is anticipated to generate substantial employment opportunities, both directly and indirectly. The project aims to strengthen HALโ€™s production ecosystem while also supporting a broad network of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and ancillary industries. It will create long-term prospects in Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) activities and lifecycle technical support, contributing to a sustainable ecosystem around defense manufacturing.

This contract not only reflects the government’s ongoing push toward Aatmanirbhar Bharatโ€”self-reliant Indiaโ€”but also highlights the initiative’s focus on enhancing defense capabilities through indigenously manufactured platforms. The move is a strategic step in safeguarding India’s maritime interests while building a robust maritime security architecture.
