Mizoram Governor General (Retired) Vijay Kumar Singh led the 84th Raising Day commemorations of the Assam Regiment with a solemn ceremony at the War Memorial in Treasury Square, Aizawl. This event paid tribute to the regiment’s heroic legacy, particularly highlighting its pivotal role in the Battle of Kohima during World War II.
Governor Singh, a decorated former Army Chief noted for his extensive service in counterinsurgency operations across the Northeast, laid a wreath at the memorial, honoring the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. His participation in the ceremony underscored a profound respect for the regiment’s significant contributions to national defense and the continued inspiration it provides to future generations.
Following the tribute, a tea gathering took place at the Assam Rifles Ground, where the governor engaged with ex-servicemen and senior officers. This informal session fostered camaraderie and offered a reflective moment on the regiment’s journey, emphasizing its ongoing importance in India’s military tradition.
Established in 1941, the Assam Regiment rose to national prominence during the Burma Campaign of World War II, with its fierce defense during the Battle of Kohima in 1944 recognized as a critical turning point that halted the Japanese advance into India. Despite facing tremendous challenges and suffering significant losses, the regiment’s tenacity earned it a legendary status.
The event garnered attendance from notable dignitaries, including Brigadier Pushpendar Sorayan, Deputy Inspector General of HQ 23 Sector Assam Rifles, and Padma Shri awardee Hav Lalbiakthanga, president of the World War II Veterans’ Association. Their presence added both historical and emotional weight to the commemorations.
In recent years, Mizoram has enhanced its support for veterans through forward-thinking welfare initiatives. Since 2020, the state has increased funding for ex-servicemen by 15% and introduced several policies to facilitate their transition to civilian life. These initiatives include educational and job concessions and exemptions from specific qualification requirements for veterans who have served for more than three years.
The Raising Day celebration not only honored the Assam Regiment’s illustrious past but also reaffirmed Mizoram’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of its veterans, ensuring that the sacrifices made by the regiment’s heroes are remembered and respected for generations to come.
