NATO has officially partnered with Keysight Technologies to provide advanced radar target generators and electronic warfare simulators aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of its naval forces. This contract will see the delivery of innovative systems designed for use at NATO’s Naval Forces Sensor and Weapons Accuracy Check Sites, where they will play a crucial role in assessing and improving the effectiveness of radar and Electronic Support Measures (ESM) systems utilized by allied naval fleets.
The equipment will be built utilizing commercial-grade Keysight hardware, with bespoke firmware and a user-friendly graphical interface developed in Europe to align with NATO standards. The technology is engineered for high-fidelity radar target simulation, effectively mimicking key characteristics such as range and radar cross-section variability. Furthermore, it will create intricate and varied electronic warfare scenarios, simulating interference, jamming, and deceptive tactics to rigorously test ESM system responses.
Designed with a modular and open-architecture framework, these systems offer significant flexibility for future upgrades as operational needs evolve. Their suitability for both laboratory and field deployment allows NATO to conduct tests across multiple locations, thereby enhancing operational readiness and consistency in electromagnetic warfare for all member states, Keysight highlighted.
In an effort to maintain a technological advantage amid evolving threats in modern warfare, NATO is making substantial investments in advanced defense systems. Recently, the alliance has tested the GANDALF-4 prototype sensor, which is specifically designed to detect and counteract interference with Global Navigation Satellite Systems, thereby improving electromagnetic situational awareness.
In addition to these technological advancements, NATO allies are also ramping up their defense budgets. A growing number of member nations are meeting or surpassing the defense investment target of 2 percent of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The United States significantly contributes to NATO’s defense spending, accounting for $997 billion, which represents 66 percent of the total. Meanwhile, European members collectively contribute $454 billion, constituting nearly one-third of NATO’s total defense expenditure. This strategic investment underscores NATO’s commitment to enhancing collective defence mechanisms and addressing emerging security challenges.
