Netherlands to Supply 20 Rheinmetall Ermine Vehicles to Ukraine

The Netherlands is poised to strengthen Ukraine’s military capabilities with the provision of 20 Rheinmetall-made Ermine manned and unmanned ground vehicles. This initiative follows the signing of a contract between the Dutch defense ministry and Rheinmetall Defence Nederland B.V. during the recent NATO Industry Summit held in The Hague. While the financial details of the contract remain undisclosed, the commitment underscores the Netherlands’ dedication to supporting Ukraine amid ongoing military challenges.

Scheduled for delivery in 2026, these versatile vehicles will enhance Ukraine’s capacity for casualty evacuation operations near the frontlines. In addition to Rheinmetall, Dutch firms Demcon and Abiom Communication Systems are involved in this effort, which aims to bolster local defense industry capabilities while concurrently aiding Ukraine’s resilience in the battlefield.

Rheinmetall has characterized this contract as a significant milestone for the Ermine platform. Coen van Leeuwen, the CEO of Rheinmetall’s Dutch subsidiary, expressed gratitude for the trust shown in their capabilities, emphasizing that the Ermine vehicle represents an innovative solution tailored for modern warfare.

The Ermine, also referred to as the “Hermelin,” is a modular and lightweight hybrid platform designed to act as a force multiplier. It integrates tactical full-electrical transportation with a mobile energy source, functioning as a microgrid. The family of Ermine vehicles includes configurations like a 4×4 manned quad, a 4×4 and 6×6 side-by-side buggy, and an uncrewed ground vehicle. All variations feature the same diesel-electric hybrid drivetrain, which allows for near-silent operation.

With a payload capacity of up to one ton, these vehicles can achieve speeds of 90 kilometers (56 miles) per hour and cover substantial distances exceeding 1,000 kilometers (621 miles). Cargo helicopters such as the CH-47 or CH-53 are capable of transporting multiple Ermine vehicles, enhancing their operational flexibility.

This substantial commitment aligns with ongoing international efforts to provide Ukraine with advanced military technology and support, positioning the Ermine as a potential game-changer on the battlefield.
