Norway Proposes to Maintain 85 Billion kroner Aid to Ukraine in 2026

The Norwegian government has announced its intention to sustain financial aid to Ukraine at 85 billion kroner (approximately $8.4 billion) for the year 2026, mirroring the amount allocated for the current year. This proposal, articulated by Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store during his visit to Kyiv, is pending parliamentary approval. If ratified, this measure would elevate Norway’s total civilian and military aid to Ukraine to 275 billion kroner ($27.1 billion) covering the years 2023 to 2030.

In a statement, Store emphasized the importance of continuing Norway’s robust support for Ukraine amid ongoing conflict. He noted, “This is a critical time in Ukraine’s fight to defend itself. As talks on a ceasefire and peace take place, the war rages on in Ukraine.” He underscored the necessity of affirming strong political, financial, and military backing for Ukraine during these tumultuous times, coinciding with a scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The proposed aid package, coming from the minority Labor government, will need to be incorporated into Norway’s 2026 budget, which is set for presentation in October. Additionally, Norway is gearing up for parliamentary elections on September 8, which are expected to feature a closely contested battle between left and right factions.

Public support in Norway for Ukraine remains overwhelmingly positive, bolstered by the country’s geographical proximity to Russia. According to research from the Kiel Institute, Norway ranked as the second-largest European provider of military assistance to Ukraine during May and June, following Germany. Recently, Oslo also declared an allocation of seven billion kroner aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s air defenses, which includes a joint procurement with Germany of two Patriot air and missile defense systems.
