In a strategic move to bolster its presence in Eastern Europe, Turkish defense contractor Otokar has officially launched a subsidiary in Romania, aimed at facilitating the production of military vehicles for the Romanian government. This development comes on the heels of a significant contract awarded to Otokar, valued at approximately $930 million. The contract, inked in October 2024, mandates the production of the company’s flagship Cobra II armored tactical vehicle for the Romanian Land Forces.
Under the terms of the contract, Otokar is set to manufacture a total of 1,059 units of the Cobra II, which includes both the base model and eight variants designed for various operational needs. The agreement stipulates that 278 of these vehicles will be produced in Turkey, while the remaining units will be manufactured within Romania. This local production will be realized through a collaboration with Romtehnica, an automotive company based in Bucharest, reinforcing local industry and fostering economic ties.
Otokar highlighted its commitment to providing added value in Romania through this initiative. Romanian media outlet Economedia reported that the establishment of the subsidiary is expected to enhance local military production capabilities and create jobs within the country. This move aligns with Otokar’s broader strategy to expand its international footprint and adapt to the specific needs of regional clients.
The Cobra II itself is a formidable piece of military engineering, weighing in at 14,500 kilograms (approximately 31,967 pounds) and measuring 6 meters (20 feet) in length. Designed to accommodate up to 11 personnel, it boasts a larger cargo capacity and enhanced protection against explosives and shrapnel. The vehicle is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and a powerful diesel engine that produces 360 horsepower, enabling a top speed of 110 kilometers per hour (68 miles per hour) and a range of 700 kilometers (435 miles).
Moreover, the Cobra II is highly versatile when it comes to armament options, with capabilities to mount 7.62 or 12.7-millimeter machine guns, as well as automatic cannons, making it suitable for a range of combat situations. As Otokar embarks on this new chapter in Romania, the partnership is poised to strengthen the defense capabilities of the Romanian military while simultaneously boosting local production and technological development in the defense sector.
