PGZ and BAE Systems Partner to Build 155mm Artillery Ammunition Facility in Poland

Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ) has entered into a significant partnership with BAE Systems to establish a modern 155mm artillery ammunition production facility in Poland. This collaboration aims to bolster Poland’s defense manufacturing capabilities and enhance the country’s military self-sufficiency.

As part of this initiative, BAE Systems will contribute cutting-edge technology and technical expertise to PGZ, thereby increasing production capacity. The construction of the new munitions plant is set to commence this year, with completion anticipated in either 2027 or 2028. The facility will implement BAE’s advanced automated production methods, which have reportedly increased shell output by sixteen times at its facilities in the United Kingdom.

The ammunition produced will be fully compliant with NATO standards, compatible with standard charges, fuzes, and primers. This development reflects Warsaw’s strategic objective to fortify its domestic supply chain and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers. The new facility is expected to enable PGZ to manufacture up to 180,000 155mm shells each year, specifically designed to arm Poland’s K9 and Krab self-propelled howitzers.

BAE Systems’ Chief Executive, Charles Woodburn, highlighted the dual significance of this initiative, asserting, “It is not only important for Poland’s own national defense but will also help to enhance its contribution to securing NATO’s eastern flank.” This illustrates Poland’s commitment to strengthening its defense strategies amid increasing regional tensions.

In light of escalating security concerns, Poland has been ramping up its military spending and the procurement of defense equipment. Earlier this month, South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace made headlines by signing agreements with Polish defense manufacturers to enhance local ammunition certification and missile production capacities. One notable agreement involves collaboration with the state-owned Military Institute of Armament Technology, which will focus on testing 155mm ammunition within Polish Armed Forces platforms and engaging in mutual technical advisory roles for ongoing research and development projects.

The urgency for these advancements is underscored by a recent incident in which Polish air defense systems intercepted drones that were reportedly of Russian origin, highlighting the volatile security dynamics in the region. This event occurred amidst a broader context of intensified military actions by Russia in neighboring Ukraine, particularly in areas close to the Polish border, thereby amplifying the drive for enhanced defense preparedness within Poland.
