In a significant enhancement of its military capabilities, Poland has finalized a $300-million leasing agreement with the United States for eight Boeing AH-64D Apache Longbow attack helicopters, marking a substantial investment in the nation’s defense infrastructure. This procurement aims to reinforce Poland’s airborne attack capabilities amid escalating security concerns on NATO’s eastern flank.
The comprehensive package accompanying the helicopter lease encompasses not only the aircraft themselves but also essential training, spare parts, technical assistance, and logistical support to guarantee the helicopters’ operational readiness. The eight AH-64Ds will be deployed with the 1st Land Forces Aviation Brigade, based in Inowrocław, primarily to provide crucial aerial support to Polish ground forces.
As part of the preparations, aircrew training has already commenced, with deliveries of the helicopters anticipated between the second and third quarters of this year. This leasing arrangement is intended as a temporary measure to enhance Poland’s military capabilities while the country awaits the delivery of the next-generation AH-64E Apache “Guardian” helicopters, which were ordered in 2024.
In total, Poland has placed an order for 96 AH-64E helicopters, with the first batch of 15 expected to be delivered by Boeing in 2028. Once fully operational, Poland is set to become the second-largest user of Apache helicopters globally, following the United States. This development illustrates Poland’s commitment to modernizing its military and advancing the capacity of Helicopter Aviation within the Polish Armed Forces.
The AH-64D Apache Longbow is a formidable combat helicopter, measuring 18 meters (59 feet) in length and featuring a rotor diameter of 15 meters (49 feet). It is equipped with a powerful 30-millimeter M230 chain gun, capable of firing guided and unguided rockets along with multi-domain missiles. The helicopter’s performance is bolstered by twin General Electric T700-GE-701 engines that each produce 2,000 horsepower, allowing it to achieve a top speed of 150 knots, equivalent to 278 kilometers or 173 miles per hour.
This significant investment in military aviation signifies Poland’s proactive approach to enhancing its defense capabilities in a climate characterized by geopolitical uncertainties and heightened military readiness.
