Polish explosives manufacturer Nitro-Chem has entered into a significant multi-year agreement with US-based Paramount Enterprises International (PEI) to supply 18,000 tons of TNT. This contract, valued at approximately 1.2 billion zlotys ($310 million), is set to take effect between 2027 and 2029 and aims to support various US government weapons programs, notably the production of 155 mm artillery shells.
Nitro-Chem will manufacture the explosives at its facility located in Bydgoszcz, situated in northwest Poland. This new agreement is notably larger than previous contracts between Nitro-Chem and PEI, which included TNT deliveries supporting Washington’s military initiatives through 2026, focusing on artillery shells and aerial bombs, according to reports from Reuters.
In addition to its relationship with the U.S., Nitro-Chem has established a footprint in international markets, supplying explosives to countries such as Italy, Spain, France, Sweden, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. This diversified customer base highlights the company’s growing influence in the global defense sector.
Poland’s strategic location adjacent to Ukraine, which has been embroiled in conflict, has led the nation to increase its defense capabilities significantly. The country has altered its military budget more than any other NATO member in response to regional threats. As a crucial player on NATO’s eastern flank, Warsaw has enhanced its collaboration with allied nations while investing extensively in both domestic defense capabilities and international procurements.
Recently, Poland secured a substantial $2 billion agreement with the United States for the acquisition of the Patriot air defense system. This comprehensive agreement encompasses not only the provision of the defense system itself but also includes essential equipment, training, and logistical support aimed at fortifying Poland’s defenses against missile and air attacks.
In March, Poland took another step to bolster its military strength by finalizing a deal to acquire 111 Borsuk infantry fighting vehicles. This contract, valued at 6.57 billion Polish zlotys ($1.7 billion), was signed with domestic defense firms Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa and Huta Stalowa Wola. These developments underscore Poland’s commitment to enhancing its military capabilities in light of evolving security challenges in the region.
