In a notable ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu presented the Shaurya Chakra to Lieutenant Colonel CVS Nikhil of the 21st Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (Special Forces). This prestigious award recognizes his exceptional bravery and leadership during a challenging counter-insurgency operation along the India-Myanmar border.
The operation, which took place on November 23, 2022, involved then-Major Nikhil leading a covert mission deep into a jungle area dominated by militants. Official records reveal that he infiltrated hostile territory under the cover of darkness and encountered intense enemy fire. Demonstrating remarkable tactical acumen, he orchestrated an assault that resulted in the elimination of two high-priority insurgents, thereby significantly disrupting the militants’ operations in the area and safeguarding his team’s safety.
The Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award, was established in 1952 and rebranded in 1967. It is conferred for acts of extraordinary courage away from direct combat and has included a monthly stipend granted by the central government since 1999.
Lieutenant Colonel Nikhil’s unit, the 21 Para (Special Forces), has a storied history within the Indian Army. Originally formed as the 21 Maratha Light Infantry, it was re-designated as a Special Forces unit in 1996. The battalion has participated in numerous notable operations, including the 2015 Operation Hot Pursuit, which targeted insurgent camps along the India-Myanmar border with significant success.
Recognized for its expertise in counter-insurgency and special reconnaissance operations in hostile environments, the 21 Para (SF) has earned several prestigious citations, including multiple Chief of Army Staff Unit Citations and accolades from the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command.
The honor bestowed upon Lieutenant Colonel CVS Nikhil underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to fostering fearless leadership and executing precise operations in unconventional warfare scenarios. The award ceremony saw the presence of esteemed military officials, dignitaries, and the families of the awardees, coming together to celebrate the courage and dedication exhibited by India’s elite forces.
