In a landmark event representing India’s naval advancements, Droupadi Murmu, the President of India and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, embarked on a submerged sea sortie aboard the Indian Navy submarine INS Vaghsheer. This significant naval activity took place on the Western Seaboard, with the President departing from the Karwar Naval Harbour in Karnataka. Accompanying her was Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, the Chief of the Naval Staff.

During the over two-hour sortie, President Murmu engaged directly with the crew of the submarine, gaining valuable insights into the true essence of underwater operations and the challenging conditions submariners endure. The experience not only reflected the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy but also highlighted the commitment and professionalism of those serving in the submarine fleet.

Notably, President Murmu is only the second Indian President to undertake a submarine sortie, following A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, who had a similar experience in 2006. This journey aboard an indigenous Kalvari-class submarine marks a significant engagement of the nation’s Supreme Commander with the Armed Forces in operational contexts.

In her message recorded in the visitor’s book, President Murmu expressed her feelings, describing the experience as “deeply inspiring.” She remarked, “It was indeed a very special experience for me to sail, dive and spend time with our sailors and officers onboard INS Vaghsheer.” The President went on to commend the submarine’s recent operational success, noting that the crew’s exceptional preparedness was aligned with the motto “Veerta Varchasva Vijaya,” which signifies courage, excellence, and victory.

By witnessing the discipline, confidence, and enthusiasm of the INS Vaghsheer crew, President Murmu affirmed her belief in the combat readiness of India’s submarine fleet. She expressed assurance that the Indian Navy is well-prepared to handle any threat under all circumstances.

This sortie follows her earlier engagement in November 2024, where she observed an operational demonstration by the Indian Navy aboard the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. These activities underscore India’s strides in enhancing its indigenous naval capabilities and reflect a growing confidence in the preparedness and professionalism of the Indian Navy’s submarine arm.
