In a significant event held in Gangtok, President Droupadi Murmu honored the Sikkim Police with the prestigious “President of India’s Police Colour.” This ceremonial presentation recognized the force’s sustained commitment to maintaining peace, security, and justice in the region since its inception in 1897.

During her address, President Murmu expressed her heartfelt congratulations to the officers and personnel of the Sikkim Police. She acknowledged their unwavering dedication and effectiveness in ensuring safety and order within the state.

However, President Murmu also took this opportunity to address a critical issue within India’s policing framework. She noted that remnants of a colonial mindset continue to influence the system, wherein police are often perceived as entities that control citizens rather than serving them. She asserted the importance of moving away from this outdated perspective to empower citizens fully and to align with the broader vision of a developed India, encapsulated in the idea of “Viksit Bharat.”

Emphasizing the significance of transparent and accountable policing, the President called for a citizen-friendly approach to law enforcement that nurtures public trust. She urged that ordinary citizens should feel at ease when filing complaints and that there must be heightened sensitivity towards women, children, and other vulnerable groups in society.

President Murmu advocated for a transformative shift in the role of police officers, suggesting that they should evolve into partners and guides for the community instead of being perceived solely as enforcers of the law. This approach, she argued, would not only enhance public trust but also foster greater respect for legal norms and authority.

The President highlighted that the mission of the police should transcend mere crime apprehension and focus instead on cultivating a secure, socially aware, and harmonious community.

In closing, she commended the exemplary conduct and community-oriented approach of the Sikkim Police, acknowledging that the force has garnered admiration and respect from the people of Sikkim through its dedicated service and relentless pursuit of peace and harmony throughout the state.
