The Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted interim bail to Ishan Shanker Roy, who is implicated in a tragic accident case resulting in the death of a Chandigarh police officer. This decision allows Roy to sit for the upcoming Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) examinations.
Roy’s petition for regular bail stemmed from an incident reported on May 12 at the Sector 3 police station. He requested interim bail for the period between May 30 and June 14, 2025, to participate in the AFSB exams set to take place from June 2, 2025, in Mysuru, Karnataka. His legal team, which included senior advocate R.S. Rai along with counselors Gautam Dutt and Parvez Chaudhary, presented the argument that Roy had successfully passed the Air Force Common Admission Test and had received a call-up letter.
The counsel also highlighted that Roy had been previously granted interim bail to take the UPSC preliminary examination, following which he responsibly surrendered to authorities on May 27. Roy, who is 24 years old, assured the court that he would report to jail the day after any unsuccessful attempt at the AFSB tests.
In her ruling, Justice Manisha Batra acknowledged the importance of Roy’s career prospects and noted that granting his request aligns with the interests of justice. The court issued an order allowing Roy to be released on interim bail from May 31 to June 8, contingent upon him providing personal and surety bonds that would satisfy the trial court or the appropriate duty magistrate.
The court’s decision also included a condition: either of Roy’s parents must provide a specific guarantee that he would return to custody immediately if he did not pass any part of the examination. This measure highlights the balance the court is trying to strike between upholding the law and allowing the defendant an opportunity to pursue his career aspirations.
