Qatar has intensified its monitoring of radiation levels in the Gulf as conflict escalates following Israel’s air strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, according to a spokesperson from the Qatar Foreign Ministry. Majed al-Ansari highlighted that the situation is being observed daily, emphasizing the ongoing risks associated with the military actions in the region.
During a news conference, Ansari reassured that, at present, there are no immediate concerns regarding radiation exposure. However, he cautioned that continued hostilities could lead to unpredictable consequences. Israel began its significant air campaign against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure last Friday, igniting a series of deadly missile exchanges that have continued for five days.
Ansari pointed out the critical importance of the Gulf waters, describing them as an essential resource for the entire region. He urged the international community to clearly communicate that any attacks on nuclear facilities or energy infrastructures pose severe risks that could affect the Gulf area profoundly.
While Iran operates a nuclear power plant at Bushehr on the Gulf coast, its uranium enrichment facilities are located inland, several hundred kilometers away. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that Iran has reported the Bushehr plant was not among the targeted sites.
The situation escalated further when Israel conducted a strike on an Iranian gas facility along the Gulf coast, which serves the South Pars gas field—a resource shared with Qatar. Despite the regional unrest, Ansari reassured that Qatar’s own facilities in the field are secure. Nonetheless, he condemned Israel’s aggressive actions against Iran’s energy infrastructure, labeling them as reckless and highlighting the broader implications of such military interventions in the sensitive region.
